App accuracy is not clinical accuracy
Consumer calorie tracking apps are useful tools for self-monitoring; they are not validated measurement instruments. The clinical gold standard for energy intake assessment is doubly labeled water (DLW) for total energy expenditure and weighed-food records for intake — neither of which a smartphone app can replicate. Our published accuracy numbers (MAPE vs weighed reference meals) measure how close an app comes to a controlled benchmark, not how close it comes to a clinical-grade assessment.
Specific populations — talk to a clinician
If any of the following apply, please consult a registered dietitian or your physician before relying on app-based calorie tracking to guide intake decisions:
- Pregnancy or lactation.
- Active or in-recovery eating disorder.
- Age under 18 or over 65.
- Chronic medical conditions including diabetes, kidney disease, heart failure, and gastrointestinal disorders.
- Use of GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide / Ozempic / Wegovy, tirzepatide / Mounjaro / Zepbound) or other appetite-modulating medications.
- Cancer treatment or recovery.
